I was there in 1995 at the headquarters of the Islamic Society of North America, when Mike was released and he stopped by to offer prayers and move on to his new life. The masses of media that came that day included hundreds of reporters, at least 3 or 4 helicopters, etc.
I saw very clearly the aggressiveness of the paparazzi then, when we stood up to pray and many of them stepped in to the sacred prayer to fake praying to try to get the picture. During the prayer, when we got up from prostration, one turned and took a flash picture, disturbing all those around him. After the prayer, I think everyone pointed him out, and the body guard graciously took him outside.
So when I read this most recent tragic episode in iron Mike's life, in a sense I feel its not unexpected for him to lose his cool. In another sense though, I feel sympathy at the obvious frustration he and other celebrities have with the aggressive antics of the paparazzi. It could be argued that not only what he did was in self defense, it was truly justified, as the paparazzi begged for it or instigated it.
Surprisingly coming to his defense is iron Mike's victim of "eargate", Evander the real deal Holyfield. I must say, I have to applaud Evander for his commentary. Mike, after losing the only real sincere and positive influence in his life, his trainer Cus D'Amato, went to prison, and turned to Islam to right his ways. As Evander says it, the media insisted on prodding and kicking Mike until he returned to his old uncontrolled ways. They couldn't leave him be.
http://boxing.fanhouse.com/2009/11/13/evander-holyfield-rightfully-swings-to-mike-tysons-defense/
Obviously, Mike, like all of us, has his vices and his demons. And like every one of us, he has to fight hard internally to control his demons. I pray for his strength to overcome this pitfall and others that befall him, for a serene and peaceful future to his life, and for him to become a positive contributor to humanity.

But as I grew older (and dare I say wiser), I came to realize the harm of the way of the pugilist. I was in California for a summer camp about 15 or so years ago, and a friend had brought gloves with him. He asked me if I wanted to spar with him. He was a bit larger than me, but I never turned down a challenge. I knew myself in the sense that I needed to get hit a couple of times before I became focused. So after a couple of nose shots from him, he swung, I dodged, and I followed through with right cross that caught him flush across his exposed face. Immediately, I felt bad. I may have hurt the guy. I dropped the gloves and apologized to him. He complimented me on the punch, and we both moved on. Thank God he was not hurt. There was no sense in some silly physical game resulting in injury to anyone.
As I watched more and more boxing during these years, especially in the lighter weight categories, I became more and more disgusted with the sport and with myself for watching it. When you watch two flyweights throw and land hook after hook and remain standing delirious yet opposed to each other, there is something wrong.
People used to always say that Muhammad Ali got parkinsons because of boxing. I used to always dispute that, especially in observing parkinsons in others, such as Michael J. Fox. But when Parkinsons hit my family, it hit home, and the causes of it became very important for me to investigate and discover. (For a while I even was suspicious of suffering from it myself).
The below article puts the spotlight on Freddie Roach, the famous boxing trainer who just coached Manny Pacquaio to another victory (yes I confess I did watch the fight). Mr Roach is himself a former boxer and a victim of parkinsons. The article begins with a reference to his brother's death (his former boxing partner). It goes on to discuss the other boxers he has seen deteriorate or have neurological disorders or symptoms, and his efforts to "protect" his fighters.
Now with the growth of MMA (I confess, I do follow it too), and even less protection and more possible damage to fighters (have you ever seen one fighter mount another and throw a barrage to the other's head?), the issue of these sports and the permanent damage they may cause needs to be looked at. The article briefly mentions some potential solutions that have been thrown out there for boxing(eg. no punching in the head, wearing headgear, etc). The challenge of facing another man in the ring is one that I enjoy doing and watching, but there must be limits and there must be measures to protect those involved. I would endorse following the example of amateur and olympic boxing - headgear, lesser number of rounds. It may not be an ideal solution for the purists, but lets start the discussion to come up with the solutions that we can collectively accept.

(PS. It's not just boxing, with the recent highlight on neurological issues for old football players and older studies on soccer players).

-- Jacksonville running back Maurice Jones-Drew.
Can you believe this?
Mark Sanchez called the play for which MJD is apologizing "An MVP Play"
Was his apology in jest?
I don't think so.
It just goes to show how big fantasy football is now. Players have to apologize if they do something which results in a higher likelihood of victory for the team, but diminishes their fantasy result.
BTW if you missed it, he had the opening to go into the end zone with a minute plus left. Instead he got to the one yard line and took a knee. His team wound down the clock, and kicked the winning field goal with no time left.
... And no, I didn't have him on my fantasy team
... and my fantasy team lost anyways.

I don't make this stuff up.....
http://edition.cnn.com/2009/WORLD/americas/11/08/walking.dead/index.html
When I heard the news at Fort Hood, everything went numb.
Such a horrible tragedy. So many questions. Could it have been avoided? Why would a physician, a psychiatrist who treats his own colleagues, go and mercilessly mow down his colleagues? Did he himself have issues? If he was against deployment (as has been portrayed in the media as a possible motive), why not just take the conscientious objector route?
I can't answer these questions. All I can say is lets all pray for an end to these senseless crimes (the next day a guy in Florida shot 6 people. And a few days before, a guy in Ohio was found with many bodies in his house. and thats just the domestic news.). Lets pray for the victims who survive to have a full and speedy recovery. Lets pray for those who passed and their families.
For me as an American Muslim, this, like the sniper episode, puts another stain on the face of our community when we need it least, when the rabid Islamophobes are pushing harder and harder to demonize our community. And for our men and women in uniform, I can't imagine the pressure they are under now. I am sure they, if they haven't already experienced it, are viewed with suspicion by even those who are not bigotted, let alone the bigots. I pray for their strength, perseverance, and the ability to set the record straight about the service of Muslims in the armed forces to our nation, and about what Islam truly stands for. As God tells us in the Quran, "whosoever takes one life, it is as if he has taken the life of all of humanity, whosoever saves one life, it is as if they have saved the life of all of humanity". This is also the irony of a Muslim physician perpetrating such an act. It violates every moral, religious, occupational or other principle that he stands on.
My friend Junaid Afeef put together an excellent perspective on the event, read it here at

What struck me from this story are a few things:
1. She plead guilty and asked for the punishment
2. The authorities delayed her punishment.
While it might not be evident to most people, the two things listed above are what make the spirit of our religion special.
Most would take the view that this is some prehistoric archaic form of law and punishment, and we need to wake up and join the civilized world.
In the revealed religions, the concept of divinely ordained punishments is one consistent throughout history. From "an eye for an eye" to the famous stoning statement "let he who is without sin cast the first stone", certain crimes deserve certain punishments in this life in order to prevent the person from suffering eternal punishment in the afterlife.
In Islam, those crimes and punishments are known as Hudud Øدود
1. Adultery and Fornication
2. False accusation of Adultery/Fornication
3. Drinking Alcohol
4. Murder
5. Theft
Each one of them has a prescribed punishment.
But what makes these crimes and punishments illustrate the spirit of God in the religion is that in the proper application, with the exception of murder and theft, and even for murder and theft for that matter, the majority of the time someone will be punished for a crime is when they themselves come forward and seek penitence by confessing and asking for the punishment. Which is why #2 is listed, unless you have 4 witnesses who saw the actual specific physical act of Adultery, to accuse someone is punishable.
In addition, the idea of forgiveness is very much entrenched. If someone comes forward to confess, the traditions say you must not rush to punish them. You must verify the facts, and allow for possible ramnifications to manifest.
So if a thief stole because he was hungry and poor, it is not a punishable offense. You also can give them a chance to change their mind. Also, if you are the victim of a crime, you have the ability to forgive the criminal and prevent the punishment.
As I read it, the Malaysian authorities have taken the step of delaying the punishment of this lady for the sake of this blessed month. And she has opted to accept the punishment in this life rather than fight the punishment here for the sake of her salvation in the hereafter. What is so wrong with that?
It is a long standing habit of the Israelis and their zionist supporters to avoid actual debate and discussion of the facts and to sidestep valid criticism by levelling this type of accusation in response. It gets even funnier when Jews and other Semites are the ones levelling the criticism, as they become "self loathing". If you have no merit to your action, what better way to defend your crimes then by turning the tables and accusing the other side of being a racist.
It's not a matter of if but when: the world will no longer tolerate the violations of humanity by this regime and its criminal supporters. Let's just hope its sooner rather than later.

A married man bought his wife nice jewelry every time he cheated on her. After he and her passed away, the daughter sold off this guilt jewelry for almost half a million dollars.....
http://www.reuters.com/article/oddlyEnoughNews/idUSTRE57H4YG20090818?feedType=RSS&feedName=oddlyEnoughNews&rpc=69
While it is a funny story, I personally find the tragedy of it that the daughter is putting her family legacy in the dumpster. I know this day and age is all about information and sharing and exposing, but to protect the legacy and name of your parents after they die is truly a virtue. I don't think the disclosure resulted in the diamonds selling for more.....

So not only are we outsourcing our torture and rendition, we are also outsourcing assassinations. Hey if we can't legally do it, why not outsource it, great thinking.
The legacy of the Bush administration lives on, and we will see more and more of this type of opportunistic garbage come out in the open, which tragically and unfortunately was perpetuated in all our names. We should be offended and ashamed.
I hope and pray that each and every one of us is blessed this month and always, makes the most of this blessed month, and comes out of it a better person.

Boy did that proves it merit.
The tragedy in Kuwait where 40+ women and children died when the tent in which the wedding party they were attending took place burned took an even more tragic turn when the fire turned out to be arson. Not only arson, but some odd form of vengeance. The ex-wife of the groom carried in tanks of petrol and spread it out over the tents before setting them alight.....

She was just released too!

She was on her way with a group of other aid workers to deliver needed aid supplies to one of the most afflicted areas of the world, the Gaza strip. The root cause of the crisis in the Gaza is the deliberate actions and occupation of the Israelis, which we unfortunately continue to subsidize (irrespective of the added debt it adds to us and the world shame it brings upon us). Truly a tragedy that the media, which is oh so fair and balanced, seems to have missed this story. Where's the outrage, where's the political pressure and action?

Veiled Intentions:
Don't Judge a Muslim Girl by Her Covering
by Maysan Haydar
I have a confession to make.
I’ve been covering my hair, as is prescribed for Muslim women, since I was twelve years old. And while there are many good reasons for doing so, I wasn’t motivated by a desire to be different, to honor tradition or to make a political statement.
I wanted the board game Girl Talk.
When girls from our small, Midwestern Muslim community donned their first hijab (headscarf), their families rewarded them with parties and monetary gifts. At twelve, I wasn’t nearly as physically developed as a Muslim girl is supposed to be when she starts covering, but I desperately wanted Girl Talk. I knew that if I announced my intention to begin veiling in the board game aisle at Kmart, I could ask for anything and receive it.
Now that I’m twenty-five and have worn a veil for more than half my life, I can admit to this shallow beginning, which is so far from my reason for veiling today. As an adult, I embrace the veil’s modesty, which allows me to be seen as a whole person instead of a twenty-piece chicken dinner. In spite of the seeming contradictions of my life--I’m married to a white man who was raised Catholic, I love heavy metal, I consider myself a feminist, and I sport a few well-disguised piercings--I follow my religion’s standard of modesty and appearance. It’s only now, after comparing my turbulent teen experiences with those of other women, that I can fully appreciate how much of a saving grace this small piece of cloth was..
Maysan Haydar is a social worker in New York City. Like everyone else in Manhattan, she’s originally from the Midwest—specifically, Flint, Michigan. She doesn’t enjoy sailing, biking and long walks on the beach. She does like heavy metal and books on immigration and refugee policy. She has written and edited for the Nation, HUES, Spin, CMJ and Venus.

Disorder in the Court: Great Fractured Moments in Courtroom History,
to lighten your day:things people actually said in court, word for word, taken down and now published by court reporters who had the torment of staying straight faced while these exchanges were actually taking place:
ATTORNEY: What was the first thing your husband said to you that morning?
WITNESS: He said, 'Where am I, Cathy?'
ATTORNEY: And why did that upset you?
WITNESS: My name is Susan!
______________________________________
ATTORNEY: Now doctor, isn't it true that when a person dies in his sleep, he doesn't know about it until the next morning?
WITNESS: Did you actually pass the bar exam?
____________________________________
ATTORNEY: Were you present when your picture was taken?
WITNESS: Are you #*%^@ % me?
______________________________________
ATTORNEY: So the date of conception (of the baby) was August 8th?
WITNESS: Yes.
ATTORNEY: And what were you doing at that time?
______________________________________
ATTORNEY: She had three children, right?
WITNESS: Yes.
ATTORNEY: How many were boys?
WITNESS: None.
ATTORNEY: Were there any girls?
______________________________________
ATTORNEY: How was your first marriage terminated?
WITNESS: By death.
ATTORNEY: And by whose death was it terminated?
______________________________________
ATTORNEY: Can you describe the individual?
WITNESS: He was about medium height and had a beard.
ATTORNEY: Was this a male or a female?
_____________________________________
ATTORNEY: Is your appearance here this morning pursuant to a deposition notice which I sent to your attorney?
WITNESS: No, this is how I dress when I go to work.
______________________________________
ATTORNEY: Doctor, how many of your autopsies have you performed on dead people?
WITNESS: Would you like to rephrase that?
____________ __________________________
ATTORNEY: ALL your responses MUST be oral, OK? What school did you go to?
WITNESS: Oral.
_________________________________________
ATTORNEY: This myasthenia gravis, does it affect your memory at all?
WITNESS: Yes.
ATTORNEY: And in what ways does it affect your memory?
WITNESS: I forget.
ATTORNEY: You forget? Can you give us an example of something you forgot?
______________________________________
ATTORNEY: Do you recall the time that you examined the body?
WITNESS: The autopsy started around 8:30 p.m.
ATTORNEY: And Mr. Denton was dead at the time?
WITNESS: No, he was sitting on the table wondering why I was doing an autopsy on him!
___________________________________________
ATTORNEY: Are you qualified to give a urine sample?
WITNESS: Huh....are you qualified to ask that question?
______________________________________
And last but not least!!
ATTORNEY: Doctor, before you performed the autopsy, did you check for a pulse?
WITNESS: No.
ATTORNEY: Did you check for blood pressure?
WITNESS: No.
ATTORNEY: Did you check for breathing?
WITNESS: No.
ATTORNEY: So, then it is possible that the patient was alive when you began the autopsy?
WITNESS: No.
ATTORNEY: How can you be so sure, Doctor?
WITNESS: Because his brain was sitting on my desk in a jar.
ATTORNEY: I see, but could the patient have still been alive, nevertheless?
WITNESS: Yes, it is possible that he could have been alive and practicing law somewhere.

Now this bit of news should shock no one. But the irony of it is this:
Hamas and Israel agreed to a cease fire.
Rockets have been fired by Fatah affiliated groups, ie those affiliated with Mahmoud Abbas.
Abbas sits calmly in the West Bank, collecting cash for himself and his cronies, while claiming to represent the Palestinian people. Mind you he was never elected.
If Abbas' folks are violating the cease fire, Shouldn't Israel go after Abbas?
Wouldn't that be something. Then there would be some truth to the whole conflict.
The truth is Abbas is nothing more than an Israeli collaborator and agent put in place, and recognized by them and the world community that listens to Israel as the leader of the Palestinian people.
His associates are not sending rockets in to fight Israel. They are doing so to give Hamas, Gaza and the Palestinians a bad name, and to give Israel the justification they want to continue their unabated state sponsored terrorism. Israel will continue to go after Hamas, the democratically elected leaders of the Palestinian people and the organized resistance to Israeli occupation and oppression, until when?
As if the massacre of 1300 wasn't enough.
True peace will take the truth to be recognized and accepted. Under these circumstances, one can have little hope for true peace.
The best we can do is speak the truth about what happens, call for change, and pray to God who can change the situation. May God uplift those under oppression, and grant true justice both in this life and the hereafter.

The following set of pictures illustrates the terrorism of the Israelis. It is of a son sitting with his dying mother, weeping. I am sure this family once had a home and land, and was, like so many others, forced to move to the slum refugee camp that is Gaza. And I am sure that they had been suffering for years to survive, under the oppression of the Israeli regime. What was his crime? What was hers? Who will raise him?
At least now, the mother will hopefully be in a better place, and let us pray that this boy does not have to live under these conditions for much longer. Let's hope for an end to injustice, and for true peace.

The contribution to the knowledge of the human civilization by the likes of al-Hassan Ibn al-Haytham, Ibn Sina (Avicenna), Ibn Rushd (Averroes), AlKhawarizmi (founder of algebra, algorithms, etc), and others have long been neglected as a result of historical revisionism...
It's refreshing to see credit where it is properly due. Now if only the Muslim peoples could get their act together and get back to the ideals that made them the leaders of the world during the supposed "Dark Ages". Instead of looking like fools, as aptly illustrated by this genius below:
Anyways before I get carried away on that rant, a bit of irony. A lottery which was for the benefit of victims of sex abuse was won by whom? You guessed it ... A sex offender.

And with it one last example of his shameless tyranny. He gave Israel a pass, a nod and a wink.
Israel took full advantage of the pass given to them, and lets looks at the preliminary results:
5,000 homes destroyed
20,000 houses damaged
16 government buildings destroyed
20 mosques destroyed
80% of the crops destroyed.
1300+ killed, at least 159 of whom were children.
5400+ injured
I mean what can be said? And all GWB could do is barely blink.
Even Israelis themselves were shocked.
A Palestinian doctor who contributed to the Israeli tv affiliate of CNN throughout the ordeal himself suffered at the hands of the Israeli monsters. His own children were killed when his home was shelled. See for yourself and the reaction of the broadcasters on the Israeli tv live:
More on the doctor
More on other victims

GWB didn't take a second look when the UN's own building was bombed by the Israelis. In a scene reminiscent of the massacre of Srebrenica, the Israelis instructed the refugees to go to the UN building for shelter, and then mercilessly slaughtered them.

These war crimes didn't even stir W. He had better things to do and care about. I guess packing and preparing his defense for his own future trials for his crimes. He did though want to save face a little, by leaking that he had rejected a request by Israel last year to attack Iran. Bravo....

The best the Israelis could do is half apologize to the UN, and question all the reporting being done on their crimes as being fake, concocted or otherwise not true. Especially considering they had done their best to prevent media and aid workers from being in the area and covering their actions.
See eg. http://us.cnn.com/2009/WORLD/meast/01/09/gaza.video.accusations/index.html

From the Daily Show, watch especially the last 30 seconds
Lastly, were you aware that Congresswoman and former Green Party Presidential Candidate Cynthia McKinney was on a relief boat headed to Gaza with other concerned dignitaries, physicians, and activists? Did you also know that Israel rammed that boat? I didn't, and I can thank the fair and balanced media for this.

Leave the spin out, and what are you left with?
Genocide.
Attacks on an impoverished area of refugees in slum camps who were already facing a humanitarian disaster as a result of a blockade, by a powerful military subsidized by the US. From the same folks who have been stealing the land of these refugees for years. Attacking all those who have been democratically elected in favor of someone the Israelis, the US and seemingly everyone else wants to impose on these people.
Today, 40 civilians were killed in a UN school. Many had gone there to take shelter from the ongoing attacks.
Yet the world is silent. The US vetos potential UN security council resolutions.
We hear more about the dead cat of the Bush family and the dead son of John Travolta than of the 629 killed and 2700 injured.
If President Elect Obama really is about change, he should listen to what the world is saying. Forget about the facts on the ground.
The world as a whole is outraged. How dare this be allowed to go on? This is murder plain and simple. This is a violation of every human right the UN and US stand for. This is a violation of the US Arms Export Control Act.
Obama and every human being on this planet have a duty. To prevent oppression. to prevent genocide. Speak out. Pray. Do not allow this to go on without any action by you. How would you want it to be if the roles were reversed, and the Palestinians were watching you be victimized? Write to your representatives and to the President elect. Write to your local paper. Speak out on the radio and the forums
